Raven Golf Club, home in 2006 and 2007 to the Boeing Championship - a stop on the PGA Champions Tour - is masterfully carved through the marshes and pine trees of Sandestin Florida Golf Resort. Robert Trent Jones Jr. crafted this unique and visually stunning 6,900-yard par 71 into what he calls "a true modern traditional."
Voted "Best New Course in Florida in 2000" by Florida Golf News, the Raven Golf Club is a natural wonder that presents drama and strategy on every tee. Guests are presented with a myriad of exciting shot options while experiencing dramatic changes in color and texture throughout the course. Large undulating greens make club selection an essential part of each round. All of this combined with Raven Golf Club's nationally recognized guest service makes it a must play during your stay at one of our luxury Destin vacation rentals.
This is truly a special course! The Raven is the premier public option at Sandestin and it does not take you long to see why! It has a wonderful setup with a PGA feel on every hole. As you enter the premises of the course, you will be greeted by some of the nicest people you will meet on your trip. They will make sure that you have everything you need to enjoy your day at their property and they pride themselves in their "southern hospitality." Each person we talked to was very interested in our day and was willing to offer any assistance to make sure that it was as good as we hoped for. On the course, you can see why they are so proud of their property. The first hole is very inviting with a spacious fairway and short approach shot. They want you to get a smile on your face right away, but it does not stay that easy! The holes get longer and they add enough water to make you think over each shot. We appreciated how the course is very fair and does not hide anything from you, but rather offers a wonderful balance of risk/reward. There are pins you can get at… but there are hazards that you can get at even easier and it makes you place your wager with each shot how aggressive you want to be.
The Raven offers some of the most unique par 3s you will ever play in one round, headlined by the Island hole #6. You don't have to drive all the way to TPC Sawgrass to have the island adventure. It is such a scenic hole that it can be hard to focus on the task at hand. Beware of the right pin placement that brings the bunker, water, and a green that falls off to right all in to play. If there is ever a poster for playing to the center of the green and being happy with par, this is it! Another very neat feature of this course is the par 3 #16A and #16B. Yes, you read that right, there are two holes set up and ready to go and at the start of play they tell you which one you will be playing. 16A plays considerably longer but 16B has a green that is surrounded by bunkers with no bailout area… so there's really no easy option.
Lastly, 4 of the final 5 holes have water next to the green, so keep your head up because anything can happen over that closing stretch. That is punctuated by the par 5 17th and par 4 18th. Anything pulled left makes you pray as the ball is in the air!
If you have always skipped The Raven in the past to play courses that were on the Gulf side, you definitely want to rethink that decision on your next trip down. While those can offer a scenic hole or two, The Raven Golf Club at Sandestin is a championship golf course from start to finish with no 'filler' holes. Everything about this course will make you extremely happy you booked your round here at Sandestin!
